Question for today: Do you ever flip a coin, roll a die, etc. when you are not sure what you should do next in a story?

Another hurricane. And another. And another. My heart is with you if you are in path of any of them. ... Hurricanes aside, what have you been doing today?

A relevant question: How many different ways do you back up or save your writing for the long term?

I am going to use the Force here: You did notice that I missed a check-in for yesterday. *waves hand* There. Now! Let us continue. I will be your host for the rest of this month, and I look forward to ending September on a high note. What have you been doing today?

And a silly question to start things off: Do you do hand exercises at your keyboard before (or after) writing?

It's time to sign up for the October WIP challenge!

Some people join the challenge midmonth, or comment on check-in posts without signing up, which is fine -- I'm glad there's a way for the challenge to be useful in a variety of ways.

But for those of you who find the commitment of signing up useful, please leave a comment with the below information.

Signups will be open until the end of September.

  • Level of challenge: 1 chapter, 1000 words, 1 fic finished, whatever you like
  • Fandom(s) involved: if you know at this point
  • What you're looking for from the challenge: this could be as vague or specific as you like: someone to be accountable to, someone to remind you to write, someone to bounce ideas off, etc.
  • What you could offer other participants yourself: ditto!
  • How people should contact you: DW message, e-mail, IM etc.
  • Time zone: useful for seeing who might be up for a writing session at a time convenient to you

Copypaste below:

I couldn't continue to run this challenge without assistance with the daily check-in posts. Many thanks to everyone who's helped with the check-ins before!

Please let me know if you'd be interested in helping out. A week per person would be ideal (I usually assign weeks running Sunday-Saturday just for consistency). I'm happy to help come up with suggestions for discussion topics (& Friday or Saturday is usually the general chat/snippet/beta-seeking etc. post).

(& if you've completed a fic through the challenge, don't forget our collection on AO3! If you need AO3 invites, let me know.)

Dear writer,

I’m very excited the winter exchange season is starting up again. It’s always my fave end of the year event, and I hope you end up having fun with whatever characters/prompts you end up picking! And in case none of the prompts in my sign-up appeal, here is a list of more general likes/tropes/kinks. I'd be more than happy to receive a story based on any of this, even if it's not something I listed as a prompt. Furthermore, I ship some of the people I requested, but I'm well aware that not everyone ships these characters or that we might only match on one character. So even though I listed several shippy prompts, I'd be just as happy with non-shippy fic that just has my faves interact, or character-focused fic that explores their canon lives some more.

Do not want: gore, modern/mundane AU (unless prompted)

General likes:

Forced intimacy of any kind! This is one of my all-time faves, in any sort of situation or scenario. People thrust into closeness before they are ready for it and forced to overcome their differences is always delightful to me. Any tropefic of the handcuffed-togther, bed-sharing, undercover gay, arranged marriage etc. kind is always going to make me happy!
Huddling for warmth
One character trying to protect another with their own life (or really any sort of loyalty kink!)
Enemies forced to work together
Epistolary fic
Hand-feeding
Hot, sweltering summer days/nights
Bathing/washing - especially if one character is taking care of another
Casefic, or any sort of action/adventure scenario where characters have to work together
Enemies to friends to lovers
Enemy hatesex
Emotional vulnerability
Unhealthy/co-dependent relationships
A character surrendering himself

I'm fine with dub-con/non-con/rape, unhealthy relationships, any kind of D/s, BDSM, power play or pain play. For further porny inspiration, my Smut Swap letter might help: https://esteliel.dreamwidth.org/454688.html

Hello Trick or Treat Writer/Artist!

First of all: I'm not hard to please. I'm sure I'll be delighted with whatever you write or draw, so please don't stress over it.

General things I love:

★ relationships built on strong/intense friendship
★ strong/intense friendship in general
★ missing scenes from canon and/or reactions to canon scenes
★ all kinds of moods, from quiet to bittersweet to angsty to funny to intense to fluffy
★ slice-of-life and/or character studies
★ simple everyday non-schmoop romance
★ hurt/comfort - especially emotional wounds or injuries sustained by athletes or in combat
★ stoic characters cracking around the edges
★ casual touching and physical affection (between friends and/or romantic partners)
★ non-penetrative sex (don't feel like you have to include smut, though)
★ banter and/or banter during sex
★ autumn and/or winter themes and/or storms
★ canon compliance is great but not required
★ gen- and ship-based works are equally awesome (gen about any of my favourite characters would be lovely; I've listed pairings below, too, in case you want to go that route with either romantic/sexual or platonic relationships)

★ for Silm/LotR I also like fourth-age settings and/or reunions
★ for YOI I also like skaters on the ice together (practicing, performing, or just goofing around)
★ for SSSS I also like atmospheric creepiness and/or the aftermath of combat

★ I'm not great at prompting for art but I do love b&w or limited/muted colour palettes

★ some much-loved pairings are
      ★ Glorfindel/Erestor/Haldir in any combination, Finrod/Maglor, Aegnor/Andreth, Aredhel/Elenwë, Arwen/Tauriel
      ★ Otabek/JJ/Leo in any combination, Otabek/Yuri, Christophe/Victor, Leo/Guang-Hong/Phichit in any combination
      ★ Reynir/Onni, Emil/Lalli, Tuuri/OFC, Aksel/Sigrun

DNWs:

★ character bashing (breaking up a canon couple for a different ship is fine, but please don't bash and/or vilify the leftover character in the process)
★ homophobia
★ non-con, dub-con, infidelity (open relationships are fine), D/s, BDSM, kinks involving bodily fluids, humiliation, A/B/O, mpreg
★ non-canon character death (canon or OCs is fine), animal harm
★ marriage proposals and/or ceremonies
★ high school/coffeeshop/etc. AU, non-canon genders or pronouns

And that's it. I hope something sparks for you.

What’s your favorite book (or books!) about how to be a better writer?

We’ve made it to Wednesday! If the first part of your week was super busy, I hope the second part provides more time and space to write.

I’ve been making super slow progress on a fic synposis. I’m trying to lay out all of its pieces before I turn it into prose, but I wish I could get to the actual writing! How do you approach projects? Are you a plotter or a pantser?
